Putting the kettle on has long been the answer to most problems. Now research claims to confirm the benefits of tea drinking by proving it is beneficial to health.
Drinking lots of tea may increase a patient’s chance of surviving a heart attack, according to a study of 1,900 American heart attack patients.
Tea enthusiasts who drink more than 14 cups a week were the least likely to die in the years following a heart attack, the study published in the Journal of the American Heart Association found. Britons drink 165 million cups of tea every day, according to the British Tea Council — equivalent to three cups per person. Tea contains flavonoids, antioxidants which occur naturally in plants, which are believed to have a wide range of heath benefits. The American researchers investigated the effect of tea on heart attack survival rates by interviewing and examining patients over nearly four years starting four days after their attack.
The study included 1,019 non-tea drinkers, 615 moderate drinkers whose average weekly tea intake in the year before their heart attack was less than 14 cups and 266 heavy tea drinkers who drank more than 14 cups per week. Moderate drinkers averaged two cups of tea per week while heavy drinkers averaged 19.
When the patients were contacted nearly four years after their heart attacks, 313 were found to have died. Three quarters of the deceased patients had died from cardiovascular disease. Heavy tea drinkers were most likely to have survived while the death rate among moderate tea drinkers was nearly one third lower than that of those who did not drink tea. This led researchers to conclude that there was an “inverse relationship” between tea drinking and heart attack survival rates, the study found.
Kenneth Mukamal, assistant professor of medicine at Harvard University, believes the study suggests a link between the consumption of flavonoids and better survival rates in people suffering from heart or blood vessel disease.
Mr. Mukamal said: “We found that tea drinkers generally had lower death rates regardless of age, gender, smoking status, obesity, hypertension, diabetes or previous heart attack.” Flavonoids may also have helped some patients avoid further heart attacks by preventing degeneration of the arterial wall, Mukamal suggested.
He cited an earlier study in which black tea drinking improved the blood vessels’ ability to relax.
Flavonoids can also have anti-clotting effects but more research is needed to establish whether this happens in the body, he added.
Apples, onions, broccoli and red wine are also rich in flavanoids. The researchers also found that caffeine intake had no effect upon patients’ survival.
Further research, including detailed accounts of patients’ diets, is needed to discover whether there is a definite link between tea and survival after a heart attack, Mukamal said.
This is the latest in a series of studies to conclude that tea drinking can be good for health.
Earlier this year a study in China showed that regular tea-drinkers were only half as likely to develop cancer of the stomach or oesophagus as non-drinkers.
Research also revealed that the caffeine in tea or coffee could relieve aches and pains at least as quickly as painkilling medication.

No one would have made the connection between his job and his death, had it not been for a doctor who specifically asked if he had been in a warehouse or exposed to dried rat or mouse droppings at any time. They said there is a virus (much like the Hanta virus) that lives in dried rat and mouse droppings. Once dried, these droppings are like dust and can easily be breathed in or ingested if a person does not wear protective gear or fails to wash face and hands thoroughly. An autopsy was performed on the clerk to verify the doctor's suspicions.
This is why it is extremely important to ALWAYS carefully rinse off the tops of canned sodas or foods, and to wipe off pasta packaging, cereal boxes, and so on. Almost everything you buy in a supermarket was stored in a warehouse at one time or another, and stores themselves often have rodents.
Most of us remember to wash vegetables and fruits but never think of boxes and cans. The ugly truth is, even the most modern, upper-class, super store has rats and mice. And their warehouse most assuredly does!
Whenever you buy any canned soft drink, please make sure that you wash the top with running water and soap or, if that is not available, drink with a straw. The investigation of soda cans by the Center for Disease Control in Atlanta discovered that the tops of soda cans can be encrusted with dried rat's urine, which is so toxic it can be lethal. Canned drinks and other foodstuffs are stored in warehouses and containers that are usually infested with rodents, and then they get transported to retail outlets without being properly cleaned.

Make sure you break for at least 3 days after one session of instant noodles before you eat your next packet! Please read the info shared to me by a doctor. My family stopped eating instant noodles more than 5 years ago after hearing about the wax coating the noodles - the wax is not just in the Styrofoam containers but it coats the noodles. This is why the instant noodles do not stick to each other when cooking.
If one were to examine the ordinary Chinese yellow noodles in the market, one will notice that, in their uncooked state the noodles are oily. This layer of oil prevents the noodles from sticking together.
Wanton noodles in their uncooked state have been dusted with flour to prevent them sticking together. When the hawker cooks the noodles, notice he cooks them in hot water and then rinses them in cold water before cooking them in hot water again. This process is repeated several times before the noodles are ready to be served. The cooking and rinsing process prevents noodles from sticking together.
The hawker then "lowers the noodles in oil and sauce to prevent the noodles from sticking if they are to be served dry. Cooking instructions for spaghetti require oil or butter to be added in the water when boiling the spaghetti to prevent the pasta from sticking together. Otherwise, one gets a big clump of spaghetti!
There was an SBC (now TCS) actor some years ago, who at a busy time of his career had no time to cook, resorted to eating instant noodles everyday. He got cancer later on. His doctor told him about the wax in instant noodles. The doctor told him that our body will need up to 2 days to clear the wax. There was also an SIA steward who after moving out from his mother's house into his own house, did not cook but ate instant noodles almost every meal. He had cancer, and has since died from it.

Research has shown that in the 1980s, the chance of getting cancer is 1 out of 8000 and now, in the 1990s, the chances of getting cancer is 1 out of 3, which is very serious. Basic foods eaten by millions around the world such as bread, biscuits, potato chips and french fries contain alarmingly high quantities of acrylamide, a substance believed to cause cancer, Swedish scientists said on Wednesday.
The research carried out at Stockholm University in cooperation with experts at Sweden's National Food Administration, a government food safety agency, showed that heating of carbohydrate-rich foods, such as potatoes, rice or cereals formed acrylamide, a much studied substance classified as a probable human carcinogen.
The research was deemed so important that the scientists decided on the unusual step of going public with their findings before the research had been officially published in an academic journal.
"I have been in this field for 30 years and I have never seen anything like this before," said Leif Busk, head of the food administration's research department.
Findings unveiled at a news conference called by the food administration showed that an ordinary bag of potato chips may contain up to 500 times more of the substance than the top level allowed in drinking water by the World Health Organization.
French fries sold at Swedish franchises of U.S. fast-food chains Burger King Corp and McDonald's contained about 100 times the one microgram per liter maximum permitted by the WHO for drinking water, the study showed.
One milligram, or 0.001 grams, contains 1,000 micrograms. Known hazard
The Environmental Protection Agency classifies acrylamide, a colorless, crystalline solid, as a medium hazard probable human carcinogen.
According to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, acrylamide induces gene mutations and has been found in animal tests to cause benign and malignant stomach tumors.
It is also known to cause damage to the central and peripheral nervous system.
"The discovery that acrylamide is formed during the preparation of food, and at high levels, is new knowledge. It may now be possible to explain some of the cases of cancer caused by food," Busk said.
"Fried, oven-baked and deep-fried potato and cereal products may contain high levels of acrylamide," the administration said. "Acrylamide is formed during the preparation of food and occurs in many foodstuffs...Many of the analyzed foodstuffs are consumed in large quantities, e.g. potato crisps, french fries, fried potatoes, biscuits and bread."
Among products analyzed in the study were potato chips made by Finnish company CHIPS ABP, whose shares fell 14.5 percent to six-month lows, as well as breakfast cereals made by U.S. Kellogg, Quaker Oats Co, part of PepsiCo Inc, and Swiss Nestle, and Old El Paso brand tortilla chips.
"For us, these are completely new findings which have never before been known to the world's foodstuffs industry," CHIPS ABP said in a statement to the Helsinki stock exchange.
Stefan Eriksson, marketing manager Burger King's subsidiary in Sweden, told Reuters by telephone: "We have received the information and we are evaluating what it will mean."
Spokesmen for the other companies mentioned in the research were not immediately available for comment.
No products withdrawn
Margareta Tornqvist, an associate professor at Stockholm University's department of environmental chemistry, said the consumption of a single potato crisp could take acrylamide intake up to the WHO maximum for drinking water.
Busk said, however, that the product analysis based on more than 100 random samples was not extensive enough for the administration to recommend the withdrawal of any products from supermarket shelves.
"Frying at high temperatures or for a long time should be avoided," Busk said, adding: "Our advice to eat less fat-rich products such as french fries and crisps, remains valid."
He said the findings applied worldwide, not only to Sweden, as the food raw materials used in the analyzes had showed no traces of acrylamide.
Swedish authorities had informed the European Commission and EU member countries, Busk said.
"It is the first time we have come across such a result. We will evaluate this study and look at it but it is important to say that Sweden has not withdrawn any products from the market," said European Commission spokeswoman Beate Gminder.
"Therefore we'll have to see what the scientific evaluation by our side and by scientists in the member states will bring about," she said.
Liliane Abramsson-Zetterberg, a toxicologist at the Swedish food administration, said: "The cancer risk from acrylamide is much higher than (the levels) we accept for known carcinogens."
